Steak For Dinner

I saw the Karma Cow this morning.

She was standing in the middle of the road, having a Mexican Standoff with my SUV. A situation that resulted in me pleading with her, a COW, to please move because I was going to be late for work.

You're probably wondering how I knew who she was. I mean, a cow looks like a cow right? I knew because it started raining right after. We've been living in smoke for two weeks. The smell of it has permeated the house, our clothes, and my hair. 18,000 acres and counting. One of the fires is just miles from my parents' house.

On top of the raging infernos, there is a subtropical storm (Andrea) off our coast, three weeks ahead of schedule. Hurricane season doesn't start until next month! What gives? When I first heard about her I thought, "Great! Maybe she'll put some of these fires out." But apparently she's packing a whole lot of wind and little else.

(Click and enlarge for better viewing.)

Along with the fires and storms, my Grandma is having a Hysterectomy tomorrow. They wont know if the Uterine Cancer has spread until they operate. We're all hopeful. Hence the early invitations to the funeral. The funeral for her uterus, that is. Please, no flowers. But feel free to send chocolate if you'd like, in remembrance of those days of PMS.

Hoop's family came into town last night. Nash and his son, QT, are staying until Saturday. Hoop's Dad will be here until Tuesday. Although I love the company, and am appreciative of all the help they're lending, I can't help but feel a little overwhelmed. As the token female, I feel obligated to make sure everyone is comfortable. No small feat in a house that's only half done.

Then there's QT, the adorable and willful three year old. He refuses to poop in the potty, despite my promises of a "Doo-Doo Party" if he does. The last time he stayed, our house reeked of shit for days. Mmmm, poop and smoke. What a lovely aroma the house will have. The only thing that would make it better is if the dog gets sick again.

Back to the rain...

Five minutes after I left the Karma Cow, it stopped.

So much for bovine intervention. Perhaps I'll eat steak tonight.

HOUSE UPDATES:

Living Room

Dining Room, With Table

These Captain Chairs were stolen out of a dorm by Hoop's parents when they were in college. I love them. They're very masculine. I'm looking for some feminine touches to add to the rest of the dining room to even it out. Any suggestions?

Master Bedroom

Computer Room

This is where the magic happens. Pathetic isn't it? I need to buy a desk.

I'm loving your bedroom...somehow, it looks much too tranquil and serene for the likes of Hoop. How does he handle the calmness??

Oh my goodness, please let me snag an invite to the Doo Doo Party! I have plenty of mustard(like infant poop) to bring.

My feminine dining room suggestion is an orchid. What can I say? I'm in a particularly literal mood. (BTW, I, too, love the chairs.)

Oh my god Tink, the house looks awesome! I know you guys busted your asses and you must feel such a sense of accomplishment! Do you just walk around marveling at it?

I know what you mean about the smoke. It's not quite as bad here, but the last week or so has been pretty thick and no rain in sight. I feel awful for the people whose houses are in harm's way. It must make them feel so helpless. Worst drought in 75 years they say. Crazy weather. Here's hoping Andrea spares us.

A doo doo party? Well we had a poop balloon day. My little one is learning to use the potty right now and although people say bribery is bad, I totally believe in it! When she uses the potty she gets to pick a prize from the treat bin (stickers, bad gum, crazy things like clothespins, candy, erasers)
Anyway it works for me.

Paint the dining room red!

In every house I make a red room. A deep red, regal and sexy. Like an old study. Like a color from the game "clue".

Your house looks great! If it's any consolation, our desk was a milk crate for the first few weeks that we lived here. We had a lot of backaches.

My thoughts are with your grandmother today. I hope all goes well.

dude the rooms that are done look rockin'!!! I'd love to come sit on the couch and watch TV with you sometime ;)

Here's to hoping QT will poop it out on the potty for you. Just sing the "poop it out" song and you'll be great.

I didn't realize the smoke was that bad, that map really shows....

Girlfriend, you just can't catch a break! I do love all the work you've done though. The captain's chairs are cool, I'm diggin' the black leather. And your bedroom looks like something out of a magazine, it's so pretty and CLEAN!

I like the color scheme throughout the house and those Captain Chairs are amazing. They make me want to sit down and have a drink.

I hope everything goes ok for your grandma.

Feminine touches...baby, festoon that lovely iron chandelier with flowering vines! Or put a classy lacy mat in the center of the table with a bowl of roses. Or hang some nice pictures on the wall to the left of the slider...

Wishing all the best to your grandma...and sending lots of chocolate!

Wow, you have really been working like dogs on the house, and it shows. Looking really good!

Best wishes to your grandmother.

Karma cow = hamburgers tonight!

Thanks for checking up on me! Yesterday we had too much smoke (causing no recess which sucked), but its cleared up a lot today.

I love your house, your colors are great. Although the large bag of dog food adds a nice feminine touch to the dining room, I think a table cloth would be simple, yet easy to change. I also think a nice floral photo above the light switch would look great, especially if was one of your own (or mine, of course)!

I saw the story about the fires on the news and immediately wondered how close they were to you. Then I saw the story about the storm and when they put the map up I KNEW that was close.

I think the house is looking fantastic! I love the colors and all your furniture is beautiful!

did you start sing "Oh I've seen fire and i've seen rain"?

I am going to steal that colour you have in your master bedroom and paint one of our spare rooms that colour. It's very soothing and welcoming.

I'm very jealous of the plasma hanging on the wall in the livingroom.

The place looks awesome.

I think we need more info on the origins of KArma Cow..

Sounds like the Karma Cow needs to hang around a bit more and move those bad karma issues away.

Thinking good thouhts for your gram.

I thought there was another post above this one. I hope everything goes okay with your Grandma and that she'll have a quick recovery. ((hugs))

I tagged you over at my place but if you can't do it, that is okay too.

That weather system looks pretty nasty. We kinda had that kind of rainy weather last weekend, but it's nice and sunny now. :D

The house is looking better and better. Definitely should get a computer table though. ;)

Thanks for all the well wishes and suggestions guys! I think I'll pick up some lilies and curtains and a girlie table cloth next weekend. Anyone want to place bets on how long it takes Hoop to remove them from the room?

Sunshine: I sedate him before bed.

Arabella: Of course you can go! I hope you like chocolate pudding, and swiss cake rolls.

Chris: Enclosure in the yard! You're brilliant.

TB: We've been living in it for so long, it's hard for me to see all the work we've done. I keep seeing what still needs to be fixed. I need to change my frame of mind. Maybe invest in some wall hangings to complete some of the already furnished rooms.

Lily: The prize bin is a great idea! I think they're just about ready to try anything. Thank you. Also, I love love love red rooms. I wanted one in this house, but Hoop vetoed it. Fortunately he's liked everything else thus far.

Fiwa: It's only clean because we don't have anything but furniture in it. :)

Tammy: Good eye for the dog food! I had to trim a tail out of the picture too. Keep me posted on the fire situation your way. I keep praying for rain.

Jay: If you look really closely, you might see me waving next to that red dot. ;)

Pamer Part of my route to work takes me through some side roads, butted up against farms. The cow (Karma Cow) somehow got out of her enclosure and wandered on to the street. Fortunately she wasn't in any real danger since the road is barely used.

Do you want me to grab the color name for you?
